National built a whole series of autographic registers meaning that it was a register that you had to write all of the items on a paper inside the machine. Some of them had drawers & bell just like the big registers.
This one did not have a drawer, It is nickel plated cast iron with 2 rolls of paper inside & a roll of carbon paper in a pocket located on the side. You would install a roll of paper on the front spindle & run it over the writing table & hook it on a take up spool in the front. Then you would pull a bit of the carbon paper over the table & you would put another roll on the second spool & run it over the table & out of the front slot, then close the lid. After writing down all of the items for that sale, you would wind the crank feeding the top paper out which you tore off for the customer & the lower paper would remain in the machine for your records. There was a third spindle for an extra roll of paper or double copies?
This cabinet is spectacularly ornate with holes in the design so that you could see the paper. It had great mechanical features that made the machine inoperable if you ran out of paper & a locked compartment so that no one could destroy your records.
It is in excellent original condition. They are rare & a nice size to display.
