Brass Cash Registers

How to date your National or NCR cash register
This chart is from "The Incorruptible Cashier Vol. 2" with permission of Rick Crandall.

If you look at the year scale you can relate when things happened in the cash register era. Not all things could be included but these are the major items.

Please note:
  1. The lists referenced in this article are only for National Cash Register machines.

  2. Be careful not to confuse the patent plate dates with the manufacture date.

These may be on an item that was invented many years before and only be a part of the machine.

You will find your serial number somewhere on the front of the register. Usually just under the indicators, in the middle of the keyboard or on later machines, on the strip that holds the marble on. If someone has removed it, you might find it on the guarantee paper that is glued on the under side of the drawer.

Your serial number will be the larger of the numbers, the smaller number is the model or class number.

Look at Chart 1 and find the year closest to your number.

Go to chart 2 if your serial number starts with an "S". This means that it was factory rebuilt.

Go to chart 3 if your serial # starts with an "S" & has a letter at the end. This chart will tell you when it was originally built.

If your serial number starts with an FR this also means that it is factory rebuilt but is too new for these charts.

If your serial number is preceded by the letter "S" or "FR", look at Chart 2  for the date that it was rebuilt. The early machines had the "S" and machines from 1948 on had the "FR".

Machine that have an "S" and a letter after the serial number can be looked up on Chart 3.  Use the last letter for this list. After finding the letter, use the number with the letter and go back to Chart 1 to see when it was originally built. NCR started using the letter after the number in 1900.

* Note:  There may be a letter after the number but no "S" in front. Just use the number on the first list. On some early machines, NCR sometimes put letters after the serial number such as "W", usually meaning "wide" or something like that.
